Italy turns 150

For anyone who has stood in the middle of the Colosseum in Rome, walked through the rooms of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence or, for that matter, walked down any street in Italy – to think of that country as celebrating its 150th birthday is rather bizarre. But it was only back in 1861 that the Kingdom of Italy was declared. It wasn’t a harmonious beginning and, 150 years later, some still doubt it was a good idea at all.
